The family would like to express what an honour anda privilege it was to attend the Pin-Point Recruitment Northern Alliance League memorial dinner.

We were overwhelmed by the amount of people who turned out to show their respect to George.

  • A Tribute to a Fine Man

    Obituary

I was Secretary of Tynemouth United when we applied to join the NA. We knew we would struggle at first and wondered if we had bit off more than we could chew. George encouraged the club to go for it; and yes we did struggle at times, but kept at it and now the club seems to beholding its own and is progressing well. George just had football at heart, knew what we were trying to do, and helped us on the way with his support and encouragement, he will be missed by everyone who knew him. Rest in Peace.

  • We never ask for...

    We never ask for miracles,
But today just one would do,
To leave the door wide open
And see you walk right through.
We would wrap our arms around you,
    And kiss your smiling face,
For you were very special dad,
    Who no one can replace.

    Happy Fathers Day
    Love you always
    Karen and Michelle

  • I am Harold(Sandy) Ruddick...

I am Harold(Sandy) Ruddick and am at present the President of Harraby Catholic Club in Carlisle. Last year I was the Chairman but my personal circumstances meant that I had to change my position within the football club
I have to say that I have had the pleasure on a number of occasions to have met George and I always found him to be entetaining and very knowledge.
I remember on the occasion of when we won the league and he attended our club presentation and he was wonderful company.
My feelings go out to his family. I have left this until now to contribute as I can understand the families feelings. I have recently lost my wife (following a long illness) so I can understand how everyone feels.

  • In my 25 ongoing...

In my 25 ongoing refereeing seasons in the Northern Football Alliance, George was always a great personal friend and supporter of match officials. We have a lot to thank him for. What was even better was his exquisite taste in music - a big Atlantic Soul and Tamla Motown fan!! I know he will be in Soul Heaven now with Otis Redding, James Brown, Marvin Gaye etc. Enjoy the never ending show George.

  • George was a very...

George was a very nice man who always had time for me as a newly qualified Referee. My lasting memory will be the time I made a mistake in a game between Northumbria University and Seghill. I got alot of stick, because of that mistake. I felt terrible after the game. George after the game took me to one side and gave me words of encouragment. This meant so much to me, and I will always remember George as a pillar of support. His words were inspiational, his memory will always be with me. Thank you George.

  • I first met George...

I first met George over 25 years ago,he was running St Nicholas FC and I was refereeing ,it was obvious he was a passionate about his football although everything had to be done fairly, indeed, he was a champion of fairness.Over the years our families became firm friends and it would be fair to say everyone loved each other.
When something really good happens in life, I have a saying ,"every now and then God lets you have a one",the day George entered my family's life "God really did let us have a one". It's our priviledge to call George and his lovely family our friends,he was an absolute diamond of a man,a true gentleman, loyal, forthright, but most of all down to earth ,what you seen was what you got.He was'nt the tallest of men but in stature he was immense.
God bless Carol and the Girls and God bless you George

  • I first met George...

I first met George about 12 years ago as he was seeking a new sponsor for the Northern Alliance , over the years George and I developed quite a close bond with him becoming a client and a friend . I also had the pleasure to meet his wife and family on a number of occasions and I could also see what a close knit family they were . George was a great organiser and was very much his own man . He had a good sense of humour and was a like able and honest man . I will miss seeing him and putting the world to rights and he is a sad loss to all those who loved and knew him . If in my life I am as well respected and loved as George, then I think I will have had a useful and productive life . Rest in peace George .

  • It was an honour...

It was an honour and a privelege to know George. His contribution to the game we all love cannot be understated.

He offered support to players, committees and officials alike with a friendly manner.

I'll miss him, we'll miss him, grass roots football will miss him.

  • George was a tremendous...

George was a tremendous help when we started our club and was always there when we needed help or advice. I only knew George for four years but in that time it was clear to me his love and dedication to the game and the Northern Alliance. We will all miss him, but all our thoughts are with his family. Thanks George from everyone at Hexham FC

  • George’s family would like...

George’s family would like to send a special thank you to all the members of the Northern Football Alliance League Management Committee and the many players, managers and referees who travelled far and wide to be with us.

A sincere thank you to Ted and Margaret Wilshire for their special friendship, kindness and thoughtfulness, not only to George but to the whole family.

Many thanks to Rev Alan Maxwell of All Saints Church, Gosforth for a comforting service and to Charles and the staff at Duckworth’s funeral Directors for the faultless funeral arrangements.

  • Most of the people...

Most of the people who knew you would say you were a dedicated football man who made a huge contribution to the game and the Northern Alliance Football League.

A side they may not have known is the loving and devoted family man who always put us first. You were always there to help and and offer us great advice and we miss you so much.

You have left a huge void in our lives that can never be replaced, but we know that you are in a peaceful place watching over us and we promise to make you proud!

Thank you for the many wonderful memories you have left us. We are so proud to be able to call you our husband, dad, grandad and father-in-law.

Love you always, sleep tight, your wife Carol, daughters Karen and Michelle, grandaughters Faye & Ashleigh and son-in-laws Benge and Adrian xxxxxxx

The family wish to express their sincere thanks for all the kindness, support and sympathy shown by family, friends, neighbours and colleagues during their recent bereavement, also for the special cards, flowers and generous donations to the British Heart Foundation (currently over £700, 29/03/10).

  • I had the pleasure...

I had the pleasure and great fortune to know George for the last 5 years due to his part-time work at Bullocksteads on behalf of Northumbria University.
The first impression I had of George was that of a caring, honest, forthright man with a dry sense of humour, which was still evident each and every time I spoke to him which was most weekends.
Everyone always had a good word for the man and he was respected by all.
I will miss him greatly and send my deepest sympathies to his family.

  • George you will be...

George you will be sadly missed you were a great football gentleman our thoughts are with your family from every one at Killingworth Young Peoples Club,

  • I was shocked and...

I was shocked and greatly saddened by the sudden death of George Dobbins. I met George on few occasions and spoke to him several times on the telephone. He was a real gentleman who treated everyone with dignity and respect. He spoke the truth but had the understanding and empathy with people to get his message through without upsetting. His contribution to football and the Northern Alliance League has been enormous and should not be underestimated. He was someone to turn to when you wanted good advice. I will always remember George as someone who genuinely tried to everyone as best he could, something quite rare in football today. I will miss George and think that all people associated with the Northern Alliance will miss him more than they know.

  • As a young lad...

As a young lad I came across George running his St Nicholas team I thought then he was a decent bloke, over the 20 odd years I have known George that initial impression only grew in stature every time I met him.

It was of no surprise to see people in the church and at the Race Course afterwards talking warmly of a guy who played some part in their lives. I guess some people are simply taken for granted they will always be there, their work is unnoticed until they go and only then truly appreciated.

George's family did him proud on the day, Scott Duncan paid a fitting tribute as only a close family friend could and the Northern Alliance Committee should be congratulated on their contribution to a fitting tribute to a guy that personally I will miss.

To George's family I hope when the pain begins to go they remember the comments and tributes people genuinely have said or written about this great bloke. George Dobbins. Rest in Peace - Michael Jeffels Walker Central FC

  • Although I never got...

Although I never got round to meeting George in person, I have had many chats with him over the last few years.

George always had a cheery outlook on life and always found time to chat about anything related to football.

My heart goes out to George's family and everyone that had the good fortune to know him. We will all miss him very much. God Bless you George.
