3rd October 2009

Chief Superintendent Sandy Padgett, district commander for West Somerset, died suddenly on Saturday October 3, 2009.

Tipped as a high-flyer she had been a leading part of the Action on Street Crime and Citizen Focused Policing initiatives and was well-respected outside the force for her down-to-earth and pragmatic approach.

Yet, but for a twist of fate she might never have joined the force.

Chief Superintendent Padgett, 41, was a talented and
well-qualified artist. But while
working as a postwoman, she became the victim of a stalker. After
dealing with the police about this issue, someone asked her whether or
not she thought it would be a good career move, and two years later,
she was wearing the uniform of a police sergeant.

Married with two children, she joined the force as a constable in 1993 and had served across Bristol, at force headquarters in Portishead and at the Home Office.

She moved to become district commander for Taunton, Bridgwater and Minehead, from Yeovil, where she had served as a chief inspector and superintendent covering East Somerset.

When she was awarded the title of Chief Superintendent, she became one of Somerset’s highest-ranking women in the police force as the district commander of Taunton, Wellington, Minehead, Bridgwater and Burnham.

Chief Superintendent Padgett was born in Bristol and lived in Somerset for a decade, combined her police career with marriage to husband Kenneth, a teacher in Wells, and bringing up their two children, Eleanor and Alasdair.

Chief Constable Colin Port paid tribute saying: “This tragic loss has come as a great shock to everybody and our deepest sympathies go to her husband and children.

“Sandy will be greatly missed by all of those who knew and worked with her. She was an exceptional police officer who was extremely well respected by all those fortunate enough to work with her.”

    Naomi
    Such sad news.
My mum and I are the cleaners for the Padgett household. When we arrived on thurdays 1st oct to clean the house we were shocked to hear that sandy had taken ill. We were all rooting for her to get better soon. Then when the sad news broke of sandy passing we couldn’t believe it.

We only knew sandy on a personal level but she did sometimes talk about work. We knew that sandy must have been great at her job to promoted so many times in the nearly 6 years that we had known her. We warmed to her as soon as we met. She never looked down on us being that we were just cleaners. So kind and loving. Great with the family often telling us how lucky she was have ken as a husband and such great children. Always so happy and would always stop to chat to us. Sandy will be greatly missed. We will never forget you.

  • I am very shocked...

I am very shocked and saddened to hear about Sandy's death. I first met Sandy many years ago. She and my brother were friends at college and she came to stay one weekend. I found her intelligent and good natured. Over the years, I would speak to her occasionally on the phone, and I now remember those occasions with great fondness. Sandy was a lovely kind person who should not be forgotten. I will miss not being able to speak with her, and pray that she has eternal happiness in Heaven.

  • My Name is Sally...

My Name is Sally Woodbury, Chair of the Romani Gypsy Advisory Group.
I have been honoured to have met Sandy on many Occasion only a month ago Sandy was sat in my lounge with a cup of tea, as she wanted to catch up with me for a chat.
Public opinion would see The Gypsy Communities always seem to get on the Wrong side of the law, and very little trust with the Police. Sandy was very Fair, she seen both sides not just one side, she knew there is good and bad in all walks of life.
She helped me see also that there were also good police that wanted to help the Gypsy Communities.
I talked to Sandy about her Family And Kids, we had many a giggle she was just a Young Women like me.
When i was told today that Sandy passed away, i was so overwhelmed that such a young lovely women with a little Family like myself could be took from the earth.
My thoughts are with your Husband, Sandy, your two little Children.
And you will be a Guardian Angel in heaven as you were on Earth, God bless you.xxxx
