22nd March 2009

Wakefield rugby league player, Leon Walker, 21, died after collapsing during a Sunday reserve team game against Celtic Crusaders at Maesteg on Mother's Day, 22 March, 2009.

Mr Walker collapsed in the 63rd minute and was airlifted to Morriston Hospital, Swansea where he was pronounced dead.

He was the second Wakefield player to die in a six-month period. Cook Island international Adam Watene, 31, died after collapsing during a training session in October 2008.

Mr Walker, a second rower or loose forward, signed for Wakefield in November 2008 having spent three years at Salford City Reds where he earned representative honours with Yorkshire and England in 2007.

Before joining Salford, Mr Walker played for amateur side Churwell Chiefs.

Wakefield Chairman Ted Richardson said: "This is a tragic loss for all involved with Rugby League.

"Clearly everybody at the club is devastated by this news and all our sympathies and prayers are with the family at this time."

Nigel Wood, RFL chief executive, said: "This is truly shocking and tragic news and our heartfelt condolences go to the parents, family and friends of Leon as well as the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats club.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those involved at this devastating time."

Our thoughts are with Leon's family and his girlfriend at this very sad time. We met Leon and Kerry on holiday in Crete in October and spent a fun filled week with them, they were a lovely young couple and Leon was a wonderful young man a credit to himself and his family. We are so happy we got to know him if only for a short time. Rest in peace Leon we will always remember you.

  • I didn't know Leon...

I didn't know Leon Walker but I send my heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends, my own son plays rugby and I know the constant worries I have about him getting hurt or worse. For the love of the game, a young talented man has lost his life and I felt so upset when I heard about his death on Sunday night. God bless Leon.
