25th January 2009

For 20 years, Dave Ayres - who died in a road accident on 25 January, 2009 - ran Skin Deep Tattoos in West Street, Old Market, Bristol, and won more than 100 awards for his tattoo art in competitions across the globe.

Dave learned his art from one of his partners at Skin Deep, Mike Osbourne, better known as Ozzy, who said: “He is recognised the world over for his bold, bright, colourful work.Tattooists would see something and know he had done it.

“He was also known for his speed, he would do something in two hours that would take someone else seven, and it would still look amazing.

“Dave was like a builder. Someone would give him the idea, then he would get on with it.

“He liked big, bold, colour work, the bigger the better. He always said ‘if you’ve got a canvas then fill it’."He was such a character. He was a one-off. When they made him they broke the mould. Once you met him you would never forget him.”

Dave, 43, alsohad a passion for motorbikes and big American cars, and used to own a black Cadillac.

He was a huge music fan – anything from rockabilly to punk – and was a roadie across Europe for local bands Frenzy and Torment.

Clive Metti, another partner at Skin Deep, said: “It’s like a family at the shop. We met through a love of tattoos and music.

“The Skin Deep boys were always at conventions, we were always phoned by people saying please come to our show because they wanted the top names.

“Dave was one of the biggest names in tattooing worldwide.

“My brother went to Thailand about 10 years ago, and saw an article in a tattoo shop that was about Dave.

“He was an influence on other tattooists, but he wouldn’t do a tattoo if he thought it wouldn’t work.

“He wouldn’t just take the money. If he did a tattoo he would just ask that people show it off and tell people who did it.

“I’ll remember him for his generosity. For every pint you bought Dave, he would buy 20 back.

“He would give without ever wanting to return.”

Dave was married to Anna, and had four children, Charlie, 14, Daisy, 10, Rosie, eight, and Olly, four.

His Harley Davidson was in collision with a car. Friendslaid flowers outside the shop and at the spot where the crash took place.

One bouquet, from Kevin and Alison Dimaggio, read: "Dave will be sadly missed. Rock'n'roll won't be the same without your presence."

Another, from Kim, Guy and children, said: "A sad loss, RIP Dave."

We met in the 80s when I lived in Bathwell Rd, and I sold you your first Meteors single at HMV. It was nice to get reacquainted when I worked at Azzta in Old Market and to be invited to Skin Deep's 21st party.
You're a larger than life character whose always been there, even when you haven't.
I didn't know you had gone until tonight but, for me, you'll always be around - somewhere near Les from the Granary.

  • What Can I Say...

What Can I Say About Dave That Hasn't Already Been Said .
The Only Thing I Can Think Of Is When He Gave Me A Hug At The Stray Cats Concert Last Year .
He Felt Like A Rock... ... Phsyically Solid & Thats How The Man Was In Life. With Dave You Knew What You Got Everything With Dave Was Black Or White, You Liked Him Or Loathed, Him But You Could Never Ignore Him.
We Both Shared A Passion For Japanese Style Tattooing & His Work Was Just Like His Personalality Big, Bold. & Solid . He Lived Life The Way Many Dream Of Living It .But As With Everything There's Always A Price To Pay The Old Saying Live Fast Die Young Springs To Mind, & Dave Lived His Life His Way At 100 mph
The Tattoo World Has Lost A Great Character & My Sympathy Goes Out To His Family .
    R.I.P. Dave

Dave, you know were all gutted, our Potty Eye is distraught, & me little Bro, can't believe that I will never see you in Old Market again. It's to late for me now to become as close as I wish I had been, to your World & your Family. I saw for myself on Friday, that I am not alone in my grief & bewilderment at your passing. Your name, & that of Skin Deep will be with us & with the World forever. Farewell to next time Dave, Sean.
