Tributes were paid to a Staffordshire community champion who lost her fight against cancer.
Mother-of-two Rose Peacock, aged 60, was diagnosed with bone and lung cancer in December 2008, admitted to hospital on Christmas Eve and died on Sunday, 4 January, 2009.
She was working as a colour technician at Johnson Matthey and was chairman of the Residents' Association of the Middleport area in Burslem.
Her daughter Sarah said: "My mum had a very short illness. After the diagnosis everything happened so quickly it didn't really sink in. Her death was completely unexpected.
"She had been really involved in helping the residents of Middleport, working very hard in the association and I know she found it very satisfying and enjoyable.
"Her family was very important to her and she also enjoyed day trips away, reading and watching soaps.
"I know a lot of people in Middleport appreciated her help and she was very well-known and popular."
Widower Mrs Peacock had recently become chairman of Middleport Residents' Association after many years as secretary.
Mrs Peacock, a widow, had lived in the area for more than 40 years with her daughter in Moran Grove. Her son Phillip lives in Smallthorne.
Maureen Brindley, who is a former chairman of the residents' association, said: "Rose was a very dear friend. In the last few years she had dedicated her life to the people of Middleport.
"She worked tirelessly for them and was such a genuine and honest person. Middleport will be a much sadder place without her. She had fought for fairness for everyone and was always truthful with people.
"Her illness was so short, her death has come as an unbelievable shock.
"Middleport will never be the same again. Rose worked full time, went to all the residents' meetings, worked on her computer in the evenings on committee things and genuinely adored Middleport and the people who live here."
Bernard Wragg, who was a member of Cobridge Residents' Association, said: "She did a lot of hard work for the residents of Middleport. I used to meet her at joint meetings and she was a very nice lady.
"She was dedicated to helping the people in Middleport and she will be sadly missed by a lot of people."
Stoke-on-Trent North MP Joan Walley said: "Rose will be dearly missed.
"She worked tirelessly for Middleport and believed in the future of Middleport. We need more campaigners like Rose."
Report this message By Clare White on 10th Jan 2009Rose's loss is a great shock and my thoughts are with her family.
We worked together on different community groups and Rose's quiet, positive determination meant that the views of different people in Middleport - especially those who were elderly or who couldn't get to meetings - were put across and their questions answered. She was a very good meeting chair and participant, always with something helpful to contribute. Despite all the decades she had been involved with the regeneration process, she was very patient and would take any opportunity to help newcomers understand all that is positive about Middleport.
She could get on with everybody, while always speaking plainly, and she built many bridges in our community.
We can be inspired by Rose, but we will miss her very much.

Report this message By paul fisher on 8th Jan 2009This is such a shock. I have known Rose for more than twenty years, both as a work colleague and a friend. She was such a caring person, who always believed in getting involved to make the community better. I used to say to her that she would never retire, meaning that when she finally finished her job at the factory, she would never finish with her community work, fighting for fair play and the rights of the people of Middleport.
Whenever she could, Rose would gather together all the work colleagues, past and present and meet for a drink and chin wag about the good times we had had. This, we jokingly referred to as “meeting up for a Burslem bender”. Happy memories, but now tinged with sadness that Rose will no longer be there to share these times.
I know I can say on behalf of her work colleagues and friends at Johnson Matthey that Rose was a special person who will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to her family.
