13th September 2008

Lance Corporal Nicky Mason, of the 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment, was killed in an explosion in Afghanistan on 13 September, 2008.

The 26-year-old was on a routine patrol near Kajaki in the Helmand province at the time. He was sweeping a piece of high ground near the crucial Kajaki Dam when an explosive device detonated.

Nicky Mason, who was from Aveley in Essex, was born on 20 December, 1981. He joined the Army in 2001 and trained at Catterick in North Yorkshire. The following year he became part of 2 PARA where he trained as a reconnaissance specialist.

In 2005 he was promoted to Lance Corporal in recognition of his qualities as a leader and soldier. As well as Afghanistan, he had served in Northern Ireland and twice in Iraq. He also represented his company and battalion at boxing and martial arts.

His family issued a statement in tribute to Nicky, saying: "Too dearly loved to be forgotten, our much loved son, loyal brother and thoughtful friend always ready for a laugh, a cheeky tease, died doing the job he loved."

Lieutenant Colonel David Reynolds, spokesman for Task Force Helmand, said: "The life of a British paratrooper can never be replaced, but it can be immortalised. His participation in this tour of Helmand will be remembered in regimental history as a tribute to his courage and as an honour to his family."

Major Simon Britton, L/Cpl Mason's commanding officer with X Company, paid tribute to him: "In the aftermath of a fatality such as this it is often said that a soldier was 'well liked' or 'a friend to all'. In the case of Lance Corporal Nicky Mason these comments could not be more true.

"He was an excellent soldier undoubtedly, but his outstanding quality was his warmth and character. His ready smile was infectious and his effect upon the morale of those who lived and fought beside him will be truly missed. The Parachute Regiment has been deprived of one of its best and many paratroopers have lost a good friend today."

  • England mourns for her...

    England mourns for her dead across the sea.
    Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
    Fallen in the cause of the free.
    Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
    Sings sorrow up into immortal sphere
    And a glory that shines upon our tears.
    They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
    Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.

    They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
    Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn.
    At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them...

    They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
    They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
    They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
    They sleep beyond England’s foam.
    But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
    Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
    As the stars are known to the Night;
    As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
    Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
    As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
    To the end, to the end, they remain.

  • Dear Late Nicky Mason,...

    Dear Late Nicky Mason,

    What a shame and sad. We couldn't share our moments together even though we were in the same country, working for the same mission. To bring peace providing security, stabilise the locals in Afghanistan, to give them freedom, to offer friendly hands to join together. Unfortunately, the terrorists' delusion is unbelievable, targeted you to end your life. Though the mission will be continued to bring your dream true.

    We are all saddened by your tragic death, it is great loss and meant a lot to us. Our thoughts will be always with you.

    With sincere condolence, may the god comforts the bereaved family / friends and your soul rest in peace.

  • I want to say...

    I want to say 'Thank-You' for all that you've done
    As a soldier, and who 'YOU'VE' become!

    'A Fallin Soldier' now, is your title you see!
    But your families know you better than me.

    I feel for them and what they lost
    'A HERO'... at a priceless cost!

    May time heal all their sorrow
    Remember... there is always tomorrow!

    My Prayers are with them, only time will tell!
    To give them the strength and the good will.

    'This Hero' - is how I vision 'YOU'
    A Soldier who did what they had to do!

    You will 'NEVER' be fogotten - this is so true!
    'Someone' of courage, through and through!

    What did it cost to take you away?
    It cost your life - and I say THANKS everyday!

    We can now tell, the stories so 'PROUDLY'
    of 'OUR HERO'...'AND TELL THEM LOUDLY!

    You fought for your country, 'YOU'VE WON' you see!
    Because you left behind your special memory!

    Your family will always remember you
    in different ways that I do!

    You will always be known as this 'Fallin Soldier' you see.
    For this person who fought for my country and ME!

    Nick Mason, my hero.
