6th August 1965 - 13th April 2008

Mark Speight - the popular children's television presenter and artist - left a lasting legacy through his own artistic talent and his amazing ability to inspire and communicate his passion for the subject.

Mr Speight was best known for presenting the BBC's children's art television programme, SMart. He also hosted Scratchy & Co and observational children's game show See It, Saw It.

As the many tributes left on this website prove, Mr Speight did much to foster a real love of art among children. He encouraged youngsters of all abilities and devoted time to supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign.

Mark Speight was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, on 6 August, 1965, and raised in Wolverhampton. He took a degree in commercial and graphic art and first made his mark on TV when he appeared as a contestant on ITV's Blind Date in the 1980s. He wasn't picked to go on a date but his memorable impression of a lizard got him noticed.

By 1992, his talent for pulling comical expressions landed him a role in a crisp commercial.

The same year he made his West End debut in the musical Moby Dick, and also appeared in a video with Kylie Minogue.

But to millions of youngsters he was best known for presenting the CBBC art programme SMart from 1995 onwards.

He gained further fame on the BAFTA-nominated show Scratchy & Co (1995-98) where he showcased his ability to portray wacky characters.

On See It, Saw It , which first aired in 1999 and ran for three years, he played the King of Much Jollity-On-The-Mirth, a hapless monarch who was assisted in various madcap sketches by his court jesters, one of whom was played by Natasha Collins . The couple became good friends, but romance only developed after she suffered serious injuries in a car accident in 2001 and Mr Speight supported her through her long and painful recovery.

They were engaged to be married and living together in London when Mr Speight found Ms Collins dead in their flat in January 2008.

Mr Speight was heartbroken and went missing days after her inquest at the start of April. His body was found in a building next to Paddington railway station six days later on Sunday, 13 April.

His life was celebrated at a memorial service in August 2008 held on what would have been his 43rd birthday. The service, full of laughter and some tears, was held at the Parish Church of Saint Paul, Covent Garden.

The emotional event, attended by about 400 former colleagues, family, friends and fans, also saw the launch of a charitable foundation in Mark's name to nurture young artistic talent.

The Mark Speight Foundation set up by Mark's father Oliver Speight, is called SP8 of the Art andaims to work closely with schools, local authorities and communities to discover artistic skills and talents in forms such as portraiture, landscape, fashion design, architecture, graphic design and sculpture among the under 18s and award scholarships.

Sadly, just a month after the memorial service, Mark's mother Jacqueline Speight also died at the age of 62.

    Dear Mark,

I miss you so much. You are a LEGEND, and will always live on in our hearts and our fondest of memories. Hope you are in a happier place now and at peace. You will be one of my fondest memories, as you enspired me to bring out the inner creativity in me, which I have shelved away for a long time. I wish I had the oportunity to meet you in person to thank you. I would just love to say THANKYOU for encouraging and inspiring me. So I light this candle in appreciation to you.

Here's to you, Blonde Angel Xxx

  • Never Will Be Forgotton

Its hard to believe that its been 3 years since you were taken from us. I watched you all the time on TV and it was like we grew up together. You seemed always to be there through my late teens, my 20's, my marriage, my 30's. I was down or upset, I would put the TV on and you were always there to brighten my day and make me smile again. I think of you often and hope that where ever you are now you are painting rainbows for us all to see down here. Miss you Mark and always will.

  • Keep shinin'

I haven't left a tribute yet and I thought it is about time I should. I want to let you know how popular you were and that you will never be forgotten. I'm happy that you're in happy place now, for I know you couldn't cope in this cruel world, sometimes I wish that you dragged me up there too, even if you don't know me personally. I still can't believe you've gone. You're pure talent. I hold back these tears to say, keep shinin'. Much love to all the family andfriends of Mr Mark Speight, plenty of love to the man himself.x x x

  • Turning sadness around..

I recently heard Oliver (Mark's dad) speak at a presentation evening at my nephew's school in Stoke-on-Trent. I did not know who he was at first but as he spoke, I realised who Mark was and was deeply moved at his dad's bravery and conviction to turn his own loss into the SP8 Foundation. What a wonderful inspiration and a reminder that there is always hope in the world..Thank you*
